SLR-04: Modelling Extreme Events

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to determine how future changes in severe weather systems and rising sea levels due to climate change may affect the frequency and intensity of extreme sea-level events such as storm surges, coastal erosion and flooding around Australia and selected South Pacific locations. This will provide information about the relative vulnerability of different parts of the coastline due to the combined effects of climate change on sea level and weather, which can help coastal planners identify and prioritise areas for more comprehensive impact assessments.

Project Objectives

  • To develop and run scenarios of future changes in extreme events (such as storm surges) affecting coastal areas as a result of increases in mean sea level and changes in weather.
  • To identify the parts of the Australian coastline that are most vulnerable to the impacts of rising sea levels induced by climate change.
  • To provide the information required to evaluate the likely magnitude and frequency of physical impacts of the extreme events on the selected areas under the hypothesised future scenarios.
