Program Leader, Climate and Variability

The Climate Variability and Change program determines the role of the Southern Ocean in affecting the interannual variability of climate in southern Australia and in global climate.

CLIMATE VARIABILITY & CHANGE PROGRAM (CVC): OVERVIEW

CVC-01: Variability of Southern Ocean Currents and Air-Sea Interaction
The goal of the project is to characterise and understand the variability of the Southern Ocean and to use this knowledge to test and improve climate models.

CVC-02: Ocean–Atmosphere–Cryosphere Interactions at the Antarctic Margin
The goal of this project is to characterise and understand the variability of Southern Ocean sea ice and the interaction between the ocean, atmosphere and cryosphere at the Antarctic margin.

CVC-03: Climate History Project
The Climate History Project provides records of past climate from ice cores and ocean sediment cores and aims to improve understanding of underlying climate processes, forcings and natural climate variability.

CVC-04: Simulation of Ice-Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction and Climate
Variability in the Southern Ocean (including changes in sea ice) contributes to variations in weather and climate in the southern part of Australia. The goal of this project is to characterise and understand this variability.
